Most recently, Forest High pupil Daniel Bakwela was stabbed to death.

And, in Durban, teacher S’boniso Nyawose was murdered by an intruder at Masuku Primary School.

The Educators' Union of South Africa wants the government to allow teachers to arm themselves when reporting for duty.

The union said the government has constantly failed to secure educators in schools.

The Department of Basic Education has slammed the call. It said the union is not registered.
