LIVESTREAM: Parliament debates xenophobic violence

The Speaker of the National Assembly agreed to prioritise a debate on “the recent incidents of violence and criminality in the country including those affecting foreign nationals” on Tuesday.

The Speaker of the National Assembly agreed to prioritise the debate, sponsored by the IFP on “the recent incidents of violence and criminality in the country including those affecting foreign nationals”.

At least 12 people have been killed since the start of the month in a surge in attacks targeting foreign-owned businesses in and around South Africa's largest city.

The recent violence has also strained relations between South Africa and Nigeria, which summoned Pretoria's envoy and boycotted an economic summit in Cape Town in protest.
