JOHANNESBURG - Mmusi Maimane has lost his urgent bid to stop schools from reopening on Monday.

The founder of the One South Africa movement approached the Constitutional Court directly to hear his case.

Maimane cited poor sanitation and infrastructure, overcrowding, and staff shortages as some of the reasons why schools should remain closed but the court dismissed his application, saying it is not urgent.

Schools are set to open for Grades 12 and 7 on Monday 8 June after several teacher unions and were concerned about schools' readiness to receive pupils and teachers.
