EAST LONDON - Julius Malema's lawyer said the court is just following procedure by issuing a warrant for the EFF leader's arrest.
Malema failed to appear in the East London magistrate's court on Monday.
He is facing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and reckless endangerment.
But his lawyer Ian Levitt said there was an agreement with the court and the NPA that he wouldn't be in court.
Levitt explained many accommodations need to be made in order to ensure Malema's safety and an agreement was made with the state and the magistrate that he would not attend.
He said the arrest warrant was automatically issued and then stayed as he was absent due to agreement.
