JOHANNESBURG - Police and correctional services officials are searching for 8 awaiting-trial prisoners, who escaped in the Western Cape on Friday.
A group of detainees overpowered officials at the Malmesbury Remand Detention Facility, during exercise time at around noon.
Correctional services say they took the prison officials' keys and locked three wardens in a cell.
They then opened several other cells, and 69 escaped through the main entrance and over the roof.
Police say 61 prisoners have been re-arrested.
The prison is now under lockdown.
