JOHANNESBURG - John Moodey has resigned from the Democratic Alliance, saying he's lost respect for the party's current leaders.

Moodey has accused the present leadership of pushing an agenda to alienate those who supported former leader Mmusi Maimane.

"I do not consider the DA to be my political home anymore. Over the past couple of months, I have become more and more disillusioned with the DA, in terms of the direction it is taking."

Moodey says he no longer recognises the party.

The resignation means that Moodey has subsequently pulled out of the DA's leadership race.

Moodey was the DA's Gauteng provincial leader and Gauteng Shadow MEC for Community Safety.
