JOHANNESBURG - MTN South Africa has confirmed that as of Thursday morning, over 100 base stations are down.

What's worse, technicians can’t safely reach these sites for repairs or to refuel the towers due to the unrest in the country.

Many MTN towers in affected areas use diesel or petrol to operate because there is no access to electricity.

This week, Icasa received reports of vandalism of communications infrastructure, including 113 network towers.

The vandalism has caused communication services and network disruptions.

MTN South Africa has also had to close over 100 stores, mostly in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
