NPA to oppose bail for man accused of raping child at restaurant

JOHANNESBURG - The National Prosecuting Authority will oppose bail for a man accused of raping a seven-year-old girl.

The 20-year-old has been charged with rape, drug possession and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

It’s alleged he raped a seven-year-old girl in the men’s bathroom of a Pretoria restaurant on Saturday.

It’s alleged the accused man sat in the smoking section, with the children’s play area in sight.

According to reports, the child left the play area for the female bathroom, just a few metres away.

That's when the man allegedly followed her, covered her mouth and forced her into the male bathroom.

It’s there that the accused allegedly raped the child.

The incident occurred on Saturday and a suspect was arrested on the scene.

Both Dros and the police declined on-camera interviews with eNCA.

In a statement issued earlier this week, the restaurant group notes the incident.

It also said it's working closely with the survivor and her family.

The police, meanwhile, have referred all queries to the NPA.

The accused is due back in court next week Tuesday.

It is alleged the man raped the seven-year-old girl in the bathroom of a Pretoria restaurant on Saturday.
