JOHANNESBURG - Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande has announced that all tertiary institutions will be closed from Wednesday.
He says the date for the reopening of campuses will depend on progress made in efforts to minimise COVID-19 infections.
This comes as several universities have already suspended classes amid virus safety fears.
Nzimande detailed plans for all tertiary institutions in Pretoria on Tuesday.
President Cyril Ramaphosa ordered schools be shut from Wednesday, a few days before the actual holidays were set to start.
Learning is only set to resume after Easter.
At least 62 people have tested positive for the virus.
Ramaphosa also announced gatherings of more than 100 people should be avoided.
