JOHANNESBURG - Professor Tulio de Oliveira from UKZN's Krisp institute says the omicron variant is much milder when it comes to deaths and hospitalisation.
The COVID-19 infection rate has been on a steady decline in the country.
On Thursday, 5,920 new infections were recorded, with the positivity rate standing at 14.3-percent.
Meanwhile, some experts believe South Africa may be ready to transition from treating COVID-19 as a pandemic to endemic disease.
But the Health Department is still debating this.
