Female officer killed in prison hostage situation

Two female correctional officers were held hostage by a male inmate in a Bloemfontein prison.

GOEDEMOED - Two female correctional officers were reportedly held hostage by a male inmate at Goedemoed Prison in the Free State in an incident that ended in tragedy.

Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) spokesperson Richard Mamabolo reported one of the officers was stabbed to death while the other officer was allegedly raped.

Mamabolo said the shift patterns and disproportionate prison populations to correctional officers are an indication of unsafe working conditions.

The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) said police negotiators managed to secure the release of a female official.

The inmates are in custody.

The Inspecting Judge, Justice Johann van der Westhuizen, said DCS officials work under dangerous and stressful situations.

"We ask [officials] to continue to be vigilant whilst performing their duties."

The JICS Regional Office will be monitoring the situation at the Goedemoed Correctional Centre.
