JOHANNESBURG - Nehawu has described the gutted buildings of Parliament as a death trap.

It says traumatised staff won’t be setting foot in the precinct until they get the assurance that the unaffected buildings are safe to work in.

This comes after damning observations by the Cape Town Fire Department that safety measures were not up to scratch and may have contributed to the spread of the blaze.

The union says its members will work from home in the interim until Parliament can produce health and safety compliance certificates for its other buildings.

Meanhwile, Parliament says with the exception of management directly involved with the fire incident it does not expect the physical presence of other staff until further notice.
