JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng province is officially out of the fourth COVID-19 wave.
Health Minister Joe Phaahla says other provinces are also seeing a decline in the number of new cases.
"Gauteng province has officially exited the fourth wave this week," the minister said.
The Health Department says while initially it was alarming how highly transmissible the Omicron variant is, there’s been a significant reduction in cases in the last few weeks countrywide.
The Western Cape remains the epicentre.
Vaccination uptake, however, still remains a concern for government.
Despite efforts over the festive season to set up vaccine pop-up sites, government was still unable to meet its target of over 70 percent of adults fully vaccinated.
