JOHANNESBURG - Plastic straws and earbuds could be banned within the next year.

The Environmental Affairs Department is currently in talks with industry bodies to phase out or completely ban certain plastic products in South Africa.

The country uses about 1.8-million tonnes of plastic each year, but only 16-percent of that comes from recycled material.
