JOHANNESBURG - The family of the later struggle icon Eric "Stalin" Mtshali has described him as a selfless man.
Mtshali passed away on Friday morning at Durban's Inkosi Albert Luthuli hospital after a short illness.
The SACP veteran served as a member of Parliament after the 1994 elections.
His family says Mtshali lived a modest life and even downplayed his role in the liberation struggle.
"We are devastated," said his daughter Lindiwe Mtshali.
"He suffered a short illness. It's very difficult to accept that he is no more. But the memories that we have are of a loving father."
Mtshali was an avid reader with a taste for Communist literature.
The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal described Mtshali as a committed cadre.
Mtshali was honoured with the Order of Mendi for bravery in Silver.
His family says funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
