CAPE TOWN - Advocate Dali Mpofu has confirmed he's asked for President Cyril Ramaphosa to be subpoenaed to answer questions about suspended Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane.

The president previously turned down Mpofu's invitation to testify at Parliament's inquiry into Mkhwebane's fitness to hold office.

Mpofu claims Ramaphosa accused Mkhwebane of committing perjury.

He raised what he called a few housekeeping issues on Wednesday.

"We thought before we could respond to those inquiries, out of respect, we should raise this matter here in the formal hearing. That is the matter, chair, by now you should have received a letter from us on the 8th, pertaining to the request we are making to you to take the necessary steps to subpoena someone or president Cyril Ramaphosa, given the report that we last gave that he declined the invitation to appear voluntarily," Mpofu said.

"That letter I'm sure has either reached you now, chair, or is still in the pipeline. And as I say there have been inquiries about it but we didn't want to release it to the public domain before we place it on record here."
