Sunday Times journalist Quaanita Hunter said the outcome of the investigation could have serious implications for the president.

"There are no rules when it comes to campaign fundraising in South Africa," Hunter said.

She explained her sources stated the people who donated to the campaign were kept anonymous so there were no conflicts of interest.
