Public Sector Wages | Government says it has no money

JOHANNESBURG - Government says it has no money to give public servants a wage increase.

Unions wanted government to fulfill a 2018 multi-year wage deal that would see salaries hiked above inflation until 2021 but government reneged on the deal.

Various court attempts by unions failed to force government back into the deal.

On Monday, the Constitutional Court dismissed Nehawu's application to appeal the 2018 ruling.

The Labour Court previously ruled government did not have to abide by the multi-year deal.

Public Service Minister, Ayanda Dlodlo, says the weak economy means it can't meet workers' demands.
