JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa says battling the coronavirus pandemic, should be an opportunity to reimagine equality in South Africa.
In his Freedom Day online address, the president said the fight against COVID-19 has exposed deep poverty and inequality in the country.
"This freedom day we find ourselves engaged in a struggle that has thrown into sharp focus the poverty and inequality that still defines our society. The coronavirus pandemic forces us to confront this reality."
Meanwhile, Parliament is calling on all South Africans to support and protect each other.
Parliament says it's disappointing that some are not joining the fight by breaking lockdown restrictions.
It also says it's regrettable that some law enforcement officers allegedly abused their power.
But, it heaped praise on Ramaphosa for his clear communication.
it says all citizens have an equal chance of survival, during and beyond this pandemic.
