Retired Justice Edwin Cameron appointed to new role

JOHANNESBURG - Retired Constitutional Court Justice Edwin Cameron has been appointed Inspecting Judge of the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services, from January next year.

Cameron will be ensuring prisoners are treated humanely.

He hung up his robes in August.

Cameron is also known for spearheading the fight against Aids denial.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended current Inspecting Judge, Justice Johann van der Westhuizen's tenure until the end of December.

The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services monitors prisons around the country.

It reports on the treatment of inmates and the conditions they live in.
