JOHANNESBURG – Former deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas and Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel have taken shots at government.

Jonas believes South Africa has lost its way, while Patel says state capture has contributed significantly to unemployment.

The two were guests at the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation's 10th anniversary celebrations.

Jonas said the state currently does not have concrete programmes that deal with inequality and added that those that exist are ineffective due to incapacity and weak administration.

“Everyday, headlines talk about recession, rising joblessness, crime and corruption,” he said before making a plea to those in power not to grow despondent too quickly.

He also warned that focusing too much on recent developments in the state capture may be dangerous because new forms of capture are developing on the other end.
