SA lockdown: Labour minister says UIF under extreme pressure

JOHANNESBURG - Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi says the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) is under extreme pressure.

The nationwide lockdown brought on by the coronavirus has left the job sector reeling.

 

"The system was never meant to face such a huge demand. The system is very small, helping with 10,000 to 20,000 claims. Now are talking millions. In terms of the system, we are not going to be able to deliver as we are supposed to".

Some employees had to stop working, others had to take leave while some work from home.

Government established the COVID-19 Temporary Employer-Employee Relief Scheme to ease some of the pressure.
