SA Lockdown: Struggling wine industry targets exports

JOHANNESBURG - The South African wine industry has lost R8.5-billion during the lockdown.

A lack of tourists, several liquor sale bans, and bans on international travel have contributed to this.

An estimated 25,000 jobs have been lost in the South African wine industry because of the pandemic.

Businesses say prosperity lies beyond the country’s borders.

South Africa exports its wine to around 110 countries with over 50-percent of the wine made here being consumed abroad.

The industry says it will struggle to create jobs and thrive without government's support.

And growth will happen not only through exports but also through local consumption.
