SA Lockdown: Tobacco battle in court

JOHANNESBURG - The fight over the continued ban on the sale of tobacco products will be heard in the High court in Pretoria.

The Fair Trade Independent Tobacco Association wants the decision prohibiting the sale of cigarettes declared irrational.

It argues government regulations were implemented arbitrarily.

But government insists its decisions are based on scientific and medical evidence.

The ban on the sale of tobacco products was implemented when the country entered level five of the lockdown in March.

It still remains under alert level three.

President Cyril Ramaphosa had initially announced the ban would be lifted, but the decision was later revoked.
