JOHANNESBURG - The South African Medical Association has called for restrictions on gatherings and stricter regulations for the transport industry.

Sama said implementing the restrictions implemented at lockdown Alert Level 5 would be counterproductive at this stage.

The organisation said the government needs to strengthen the healthcare sector by employing more personnel and vaccinating healthcare workers as soon as possible.

Scenes from hospitals across the country paint a very bleak picture with healthcare professionals working overtime, battling to keep patients alive with minimal resources.

Dr Angelique Coetzee, the chairperson of Sama, said, "according to the SA Medical Association, doctors and nurses are going to thin out due to to exhaustion and lockdowns are not the solution- employing more healthcare workers is where <the> government needs to start."
