Sadtu launches initiative against violence in schools

JOHANNESBURG - Teachers' union Sadtu has launched a campaign against violence in schools.

The 'I Am a School Fan' campaign seeks to tackle bullying and assault.

It will also look at teacher-on-teacher violence and violence by community members.

Sadtu's Xolani Fakude said: "We saw this campaign as an opportunity to rally in all stakeholders to play a very clear role in the context of violence in schools.

"Sadtu right now has been joined by Old Mutual, Unicef, Brand SA, they are all coming. The private sector must also take responsibility, the Departments of the government that are responsible...

"Yesterday [Monday] we were joined by the SAPS. We are saying as members of society we need to take responsibility for what happens in our schools."
