Saftu's Vavi says Clover putting 2,000 jobs at risk

JOHANNESBURG - The SA Federation of Trade Unions joined a demonstration of Clover workers at the Trade, Industry and Competition offices in Pretoria.

Unions want Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel to halt factory closures and job losses at Clover.

Saftu General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said over 2,000 workers stand to lose their jobs at the dairy giant.

"That there will be no retrenchment for the next three years and that at the most minimum. Only less than 300 workers may lose their jobs after that three years and they would have committed to creating job elsewhere in the value chain and in the company to the total of 500 jobs," Vavi said.

He said "77 percent of our youth that are out of employment and black woman who are not in any sort of employment and that is why we are scaling up the campaign against Clover and that’s why we meeting again tonight [Thursday] to chart a way forward."
