JOHANNESBURG - Municipalities need money so they can deliver services.
This is according to Salga COO, Lance Joel.
Salga has launched a new campaign called 'Asisho! Let’s Say It...' civic responsibility campaign.
It places a responsibility on residents to pay for services and on local government to provide the services.
"It is no secret that across the three spheres of government, local government receives the least from the national fiscus, and gets just over 9 percent on an annual basis," Joel said.
"46 percent of the constitutional powers and functions are allocated to local government and yet local government is not adequately funded to execute those functions."
"As we are saying with this campaign, let us call upon businesses, government and communities that owe municipalities to service their debt so it also contributes towards sustainability of our municipalities and it will increase the delivery of services in communities."
