Hundreds of people have been evacuated in Port Saint Johns in the Eastern Cape, as heavy rain lashed that area yesterday.
DURBAN - The South African National Defence Force will be deployed in Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape.
Heavy rains have battered the area leading to severe flooding.
The authorities are monitoring areas of the province as heavy rains continue to pour.
Ayanda Gantsho from the Port St Johns municipality says hundreds of people have already been evacuated and are being housed in community halls.
"At this stage, there are no reports of missing people. Any assistance will be welcomed to better the situation," Gantsho
Meanwhile, the KwaZulu Cooperative Governance department has confirmed that the death toll from the floods in the province has risen to 23.
The death toll is expected to rise with more people trapped under rubble.
