SAPS urges West Rand residents to report illegal activities

JOHANNESBURG - West Rand residents are being urged to inform police about any illegal activities they may see.

Senior officers met community leaders in Kagiso and Krugersdorp following violent clashes between residents and illegal miners.

Residents blame the zama zamas for escalating crime in their communities.

The crackdown follows the rape and robbery of a film crew at a Krugersdorp mine dump a week ago.

"We're committed and dedicated to ensure that these concerns that have been raised are not only dealt with in the short term but in the medium and long term approach," SAPS General Michael Mohlala said.

"We'll ensure that through our adopted national policing strategy that we ensure that with immediate effect we reinforce all our deployments within the districts and we ensure in a very integrated approach.

"We [will] also ensure we don't leave any stones unturned."
