JOHANNESBURG - Cable thieves have become more brazen and dangerous, says City Power.

The Johannesburg power utility told eNCA’s investigative current affairs show, Checkpoint, it is no longer dealing with common thieves but organised criminals who are well-funded, well-armed and well-informed about the cable network and infrastructure.

Cable theft has become a national crisis, disabling cities from providing critical services and costing power suppliers millions, further exacerbating the country’s power crisis.

City Power told Checkpoint guards stationed at hotspots, who were previously unarmed, have now been issued with weapons.
