JOHANNESBURG - The contracts of nurses and doctors at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital will be renewed for another 12 months.

More than 800 temporary contracts were set not to be renewed, leading to protests at the hospital.

Health Minister Joe Phaahla says discussions about long-term contracts are pending.

"After all that we were assured that the services have been restored, and also the area of healthcare workers who have been unhappy that has been addressed at least the next 12 months the contracts that were about to be terminated will be reinstated," he said.

"They have a 12-month extension, we still have to see what needs to be done for the long term. This is just a solution for a at least 12 months."
