ORKNEY - Six illegal miners were killed and eight others injured following a shootout with members of the Special Task Force at a shaft in Orkney in the North West.
Assisted by the Hawks and other crime units in the province, police entered an unidentified shaft where they were met with gunfire.
One task team member was wounded.
87 suspects aged between 25 and 49 were arrested.
Two minibusses, illegal mining paraphernalia, gold-bearing material, and eleven illegal firearms were seized.
The suspect will appear in the Orkney Magistrates Court on Monday.
