Slain ANC councillor laid to rest

UMLAZI - Communities must protect and defend their ward councillors.

This is according to eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda at the funeral of slain ANC councillor Bhekithemba Phungula.

The 65-year-old was killed in front of his family a week ago.

Close relatives and colleagues attended the funeral of the late ward councillor.

He was shot dead at his Ngonyameni home outside uMlazi a week ago.

Phungula had been a councillor since 2011, as well as an ANC Branch Chairperson and he had served on the municipal Economic Development Committee.

His children are calling for law enforcement to dig deeper to identify what they believe is a mastermind behind the murder.

The ANC in the region has pleaded for those who might have information about the killing to come forward.

No arrests have been made in connection with the crime.
