Covid-19 | South Africa bracing for fifth wave

JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Health says it is not yet clear when the fifth wave will hit us.

This is as Covid-19 numbers continue to rise sharply.

They have jumped to nearly 10,000 new cases in the last 24 hours.

The department’s Nicholas Crisp says now is not the time to be complacent.

"So we think that being cautious, making sure that people do get out and get vaccinated as many times as possible, to make sure that we build not just antibodies but proper cellular immunity and there are many studies, including in this country, that shows what is the case," he said.

"So right now while we do not understand what is happening with the fifth wave is not the time to let our guard down. We need to take these preventative measures."
