JOHANNESBURG - South Africans are now paying nearly five-percent more for basic food items, according to the latest Household Affordability Index, compiled by the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group.
The survey tracked food prices in over 70 supermarkets across the country.
"Our Household Affordability Index shows that the price of 43 very basic foods have increased over the past seven months by R183 or 4.8%," said Mervyn Abrahams from the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group.
"Now that is before the fuel price increase kicked in and before the electricity price kicked in."
The group also warned that costs are expected to go even higher.
