GRAHAMSTOWN - The Arts and Culture Department says it has received over 300 letters from people opposing a name change for Grahamstown.
They are also rejecting the proposed name of Makhanda.
The suggestion has already been published in the Government Gazette.
Complainants are citing historical sentiments, cost implications and a lack of consultation.
Many residents say they were unaware they had only one month to lodge objections.
On 29 June, the Government Gazette stated Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa had approved the change.
The minister says the decision was made following a recommendation from the South African Geographical Names Council.
