JOHANNESBURG - Nursing union Denosa says people without medical backgrounds should not be responsible for procurement at hospitals.

Johannesburg's Charlotte Maxeke hospital has had to cancel at least 20 non-emergency surgeries due to a shortage of medical supplies.

"You cannot take people who do not have the necessary expertise in the health industry and have them handling procurement processes in the hospital.

We need people that understand the daily runnings of a hospital, so they can procure things we need and that we use on a daily basis," said Denosa chairperson Simphiwe Gada.

The Gauteng Health Department said it is monitoring the situation.
