JOHANNESBURG - A Swiss tourist was airlifted to hospital after an accident in the Kruger National Park on Sunday.

The accident happened after a minibus taxi hit a giraffe who stepped into the road as the taxi was approaching.

It fell on the tourist's rental vehicle, seriously injuring the driver. The passenger suffered minor injuries.

Two occupants in the minibus sustained minor injuries.

SANParks said the giraffe has died.

"Police will be conducting investigations and circumstances that led to the accident," SANParks said.

It reiterated a warning to visitors to drive with extra caution and observe the speed limit.
