JOHANNESBURG - The vaccination drive for teachers kicks off officially on Wednesday.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga and Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, will launch the programme at the Rabasotho Community Hall in Tembisa, in Johannesburg's East Rand.

Motshekga will visit other vaccination sites in Soweto and the Vaal.

Gauteng hopes to inoculate more than 125,000 educators and broader school staff in the province.

Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal might not be in a third wave, but the growing number of infections is still a concern. 

A further 21 vaccinations sites have been opened to accommodate more than 100,000 J&J vaccines allocated to the provincial education sector.

In the Western Cape, a total of 6,000 teachers are expected to be vaccinated.

The vaccine drive will wrap up on the 8th of July, just before the end of the second term.
