MAHIKENG - The North-West University has closed its Mahikeng campus due to violent protests following a call for a national shutdown of universities from the SA Union of Students.
The union accuses the department of failing to assist poor students with debt.
However, the Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande said this is simply not true.
Nzimande said he hopes the country is not in for another year of turbulence and stated there is no need for the disruption of registration.
"All the issues that have been raised by the South African Union of Students we have discussed them and we have also responded to all the issues," the minister said.
Nzimande said all NSFAS qualifying students are able to register without fear of being turned away.
