JOHANNESBURG - The Fair Trade Independent Tobacco Association is going to court to challenge the ban on cigarette sales.
Fita says there is uncertainty on when exactly the lockdown will end and its pleas to government to ease the restrictions have proved futile.
Fita chairperson Sinenhlanhla Mnguni said that after consulting with their legal team they had decided to approach the courts to reverse the ban.
"This decision was not taken lightly and we had hoped that a logical solution in the best interests of all concerned would be arrived at without the need for litigation," Mnguni said.
The sale of cigarettes and alcohol has been prohibited as the country deals with the spread of COVID-19.
