JOHANNESBURG - Two unions are calling for Tygerberg Hospital in the Western Cape to shut its doors.

They claim the hospital is being reckless and is in violation of COVID-19 protocols.

Trade unions Hospersa and Fedusa say they've conducted a preliminary inspection and are convinced the hospital has the potential of becoming a major breeding ground for COVID-19 infections.

“Hospersa is alarmed by the Occupational Health and Safety contraventions and disregard of COVID-19 protocols at Tygerberg Hospital,” said Hospersa WC provincial chairperson, Gerald Lotriet.

“We were shaken by the increasing number of positive COVID-19 cases amongst the hospital’s staff and instituted a preliminary investigation.

"The investigation revealed that the hospital is becoming a breeding ground for COVID-19 due to the lack of preventative measures being taken to stop the spread of this deadly virus,” added Lotriet.

The unions are now calling on the Labour Department to shut down the institution and for an investigation to be conducted.
