WUPPERTHAL - Authorities in the Western Cape are assessing the damage following a fire that destroyed large parts of the historic town of Wupperthal.

Police say 30 homes, a local school and a few other buildings have burnt down.

Communication infrastructure has also been destroyed.

It's believed a wildfire from the surrounding mountains engulfed the town.

It's not yet clear if any injuries were reported.

Calls have gone out on social media for assistance with food and clothing.

Wupperthal is about 70 kilometres from Clanwilliam in the Cederberg mountains and can only be accessed by gravel road.
