JOHANNESBURG - Three children died and 23 others were injured when a walkway bridge collapsed on them at Hoërskool Driehoek in Vanderbijlpark on Friday morning.
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, who rushed to the scene of the incident, said two of the deceased were males and one was a female.
"It is a painful day, it is a difficult day," Lesufi said.
Lesufi said two of the 23 injured pupils were checked and released into the care of their parents.
The remaining 21 were taken to various hospitals which include Union Hospital, Netcare Milpark Hospital, Emfuleni Mediclinic, Johan Heyns Clinic and Mediclinic Vereeniging.
Lesufi said although the school is 45-years-old, he can't pass judgment on the quality of the structure.
The MEC further stated that the school is now a crime scene and police have taken over.
