JOHANNESBURG - US financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was facing sex-trafficking charges, has committed suicide.

According to US reports, the 66-year-old hanged himself in his jail cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York on Saturday.

The medical examiner's office in Manhattan has confirmed Epstein's death after his body was discovered.

Epstein had pleaded not guilty to charges of sex trafficking, involving several underage girls.

He was arrested last month.

A woman had stepped forward and accused him of keeping her as a sex slave and forcing her to have sex with a number of prominent men.
