WASHINGTON - US secretary of state Antony Blinken has touched down in South Africa.

Blinken will attend the US - SA strategic dialogue with his counterpart, Naledi Pandor on Monday.

He will then move on to visit the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.

The State Department maintains the African tour is an effort to strengthen relations and deal with global issues but experts say it's a direct response to the charm offensive by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

The US is currently embroiled in the Ukraine War while also battling heightened tensions with China.
