JOHANNESBURG - A R100-billion has been pledged at the Global Citizen Festival in Soweto.

The funds will be used to alleviate extreme poverty, ensure better education and strengthen the fight against 

A-list celebrities shared the stage at the festival, led by Beyonce and Jay-Z.

Tens of thousands of fans packed the FNB stadium to celebrate Nelson Mandela's centenary.

Advocacy group Global Citizen has announced 57 commitments totaling more than $7-billion (R100-billion), in support of the world's most marginalised.  

Over R4-billion was pledged by the Motsepe Foundation alone, much of it for land reform, while the Global Fund pledged over R5-billion in South Africa over the next 30 years.

In South Africa alone, almost 200 young women are infected with HIV daily.
