JOHANNESBURG - Police Minister Bheki Cele says a special task team will be deployed to patrol the streets of Westbury in western Johannesburg.

It follows days of violent protests by residents against gangs and crime.

The minister has also promised the community an investigation will be launched into allegations of corruption against some local police officers.

Westbury residents accuse police of being in cahoots with gangsters and drug dealers.

The residents said they are living in fear.

On Monday night the situation seemed to be calm following a day of clashes between residents and police.

Several people have been injured and arrested as police fired rubber bullets at stone-throwing protesters.
