VOSMAN - The issue of foreign nationals in South Africa has become an election topic for political parties.

Foreigners in Mpumalanga are decrying the closure of their shops by authorities.

A joint operation involving the police and eMalahleni Municipality has shut over 150 illegal shops in Vosman township.

The eMalahleni Municipality insists it's rightly enforcing by-laws.

Despite evidence seemingly proving otherwise, the municipality denies it arbitrarily confiscates stock belonging specifically to foreign nationals.

The High Court has now ordered the police and the municipality to stop the operation.

The court also wants police watchdog the Independent Police Investigative Directorate to investigate allegations of harassment, theft and incitement of xenophobic violence made against police.

Police say they will challenge the court order.
